Google Voice is a Google app that allows you to make phone calls digitally, rather than using your cellular network service.

Since Google Voice calling and texting happens online, it also means that you can make calls from your computer or tablet.

Like with any phone number or service, you probably want to have a specific greeting on your answering machine, so that people who call you know they have the right number, even if you don't pick up.

How to change your Google Voice greeting using a mobile device

1. Open the Google Voice app on your iPhone or Android.

2. In the top-left corner, tap the Menu button.

3. In the menu, tap "Settings."

4. In the Settings menu, scroll down to the "Voicemail" section. Tap "Voicemail greeting."

5. If you would like to record a new greeting, tap the "Record a greeting" option at the top of the screen. Follow the on screen instructions to record your new greeting.

6. Next to the greeting you want to use, tap the three dots stacked in a vertical line.

7. In the pop-up menu at the bottom of the screen, tap "Set as active" to set this as your active voicemail greeting.

How to change your Google Voice greeting using a computer

1. Go to the Google Voice site on your Mac or PC and sign into your account.

2. Click the gear icon in the top-right corner of your screen.

3. From the menu on the left hand side of the screen, select "Voicemail."

4. If you wish to record a new greeting, under "Active Greeting" click "Record a greeting," and then follow the on-screen instructions.

5. In the main Voicemail menu, under "Active Greeting," click "Manage all greetings."

6. In the pop-up menu, next to the greeting you wish to use, click on the three vertical dots.

7. Click "Set as active" to make that recording your active voicemail greeting.
